When I look at my calendar and see a day full of recruiting conversations, my goal is not whether this person comes over or doesn’t… because some will and some won't. My goal is… how do I help this person get clear on what matters, why it matters, and what they need in order to achieve it?
It’s worth noting, the alternative approach to recruiting really sucks.
The alternative treats people as though they're just a notch on your goalpost. People become nothing more than a number. This approach completely disregards the idea that each person is intrinsically valuable and entirely unique, with their own hopes, fears, and dreams for themselves and their family. It’s easy to lose sight of that if you’re solely focused on the numbers.
Recruiting like this also relies heavily on targeting people who are already in crisis mode and hoping they’ll hop the fence for your greener grass. This is a great way to bringing in the wrong people. It’s also not profitable. And it misses the opportunity to create a business that people genuinely want to belong to.
We take a very different approach.
We don’t show up as a “recruiter”. This allows us to approach each conversation from a really relational perspective. We take a listening and question-based approach to really understand who this person is, what matters to them, why it matters, and how we can help them. We want to put together a complete picture and attract talent in a way that sticks.
